The unveiling of a Blue Plaque honouring Birmingham's first black minister Revd Peter Thomas Stanford who was Pastor at Highgate Baptist Church from 1889-1895 Revd Peter Thomas Stanford was honoured by Birmingham Civic Society who placed a Blue Plaque on Highgate Baptist Church during Black History Month 2011. The plaque was unveiled on 18th October 2011 by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham Cllr Anita Ward.
Revd Stanford, 1860-1909, was born as an African American slave shortly prior to the American Civil War, as an outcome of which slaves in the USA were officially freed. In adult life he spent about 12 years in Britain when he was the minister at Highgate Baptist Church between 1889 and 1895 (then known as Hope Street Baptist Church) .
