Grammar School Entrance Tuition at Highgate After-School Club |

1 Year's Term-Time Grammar School Entrance Test Tuition For Year 5 Pupils — Book Now for our new intake starting on Monday 10th September 2012
The Highgate After-School Club (HASC) runs a group preparing pupils for the entrance exams of the King Edward the Sixth non fee-paying Grammar Schools in Birmingham; which test take place in early November when applicants are in Year 6.
We provide a professional service offering 1 year’s tuition for this 11+ entrance test. Our tutoring includes English, mathematics, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Along with a balanced curriculum, children will enjoy reading a rich and rewarding range of books and other written materials; together with their being shown relaxation techniques to help them to be calm during the rigors of the grammar school testing process - statistics prove that children can perform up to 20 per cent better when they are taught such relaxation techniques.
We enable students to improve their confidence and ability through our interactive group sessions and through their individually sitting sample test papers. Basic concepts are fully explained in our classroom and our experience is that students work at levels beyond their year group, giving them confidence in their own ability and providing an excellent grounding for their transfer into Secondary Education.
Our Vision
Our vision is to allow gifted and talented children from local inner-city Primary Schools the opportunity to be successful in the Grammar School entrance exams in November of Year 6, by offering them approximately 1 year’s term-time tuition involving two after-school sessions per week.
It is our experience that parents/guardians of children from these local schools may not realise their child’s full potential to succeed in these entrance tests; accordingly it is our vision to give these children adequate preparation so they can flourish in this selective Secondary Education process.
If, as a parent/guardian, your child has been identified to you or by his/her class teacher as a gifted and talented pupil, then he/she may have the potential to succeed in these Grammar School entrance tests if he/she were to attend our group over the course of twelve months or more.
Experienced Graduate Tutor and Classroom Assistant - each with CRB Clearance
Our tutor is a graduate trained as a school teacher, who has extensive experience in several local inner-city schools. He has also gaining considerable experience of after-school tuition preparing applicants for the Grammar Schools’ entrance tests. He has also recently gained a Foundation Degree in Learning through Information and Communication Technology.
Our tutor, together with a female learning support assistant, are both present during all our sessions, when they are pleased to guide students in their learning towards entrance tests success. Given that the group includes children of both sexes, we realise the importance of having an adult from each sex present in our classroom at all times.
We take pride in our staff continuity as we believe that forming strong bonds of trust is essential in providing a stable and caring environment to enhance children’s confidence in learning.
Interactive Learning using our fully Computerised Classroom and Computer Suite - with Free Test Papers Provided
State of the art interactive computer technology is employed to assist students’ learning in both our computerised classroom and in our modern computer suite (these facilities are illustrated in the photos on this web page).
The group involves students gaining experience by using interactive computerised learning in our classroom. Students are also supplied with sample test papers to do at home, especially during the school holidays when the club does not take place. Parents will need to time their child when taking these test papers and then mark the paper with an answer sheet which will be supplied.
Friendly and Informal Surroundings
Our informal environment of children learning in a small ‘family group’ allows for an enhanced environment for students’ cognitive development: where students work with similarly bright children in a supportive fast-track, stimulating and enjoyable setting (photos of our small group tuition are shown on this web page).
Students get a chance to unwind when they first arrive following the rigors of a day at school, when they are given the choice to play with the other children or else quietly read a book by themselves. The tuition group starts at 4pm and ends 6.00pm.
Students are expected to comply at all times with the HASC’s good behaviour policy.
Age of Intake
Our intake is usually from Year 5 (although we are prepared to make exceptions with exceptionally gifted Year 4 pupils by allowing them to join the group early). We offer at least one year’s tuition prior to the entrance tests in early September of Year 6.
Highly Competitive Fees with Discount for Unwaged Families
Our commitment is to offer local families, with limited financial means, the same opportunity as children from better off backgrounds. We therefore offer very competitive fees by comparison to similar services on offer elsewhere in the city.
The cost for waged parents is £12 for a two-hour session, or £6 for parents qualifying for concessions (if parents are unwaged or of any other qualifying status for concessions: such as in full-time education, they are required to provide documented proof of this at the time of enrolment).
Two After-School Sessions Per Week with Minibus Collection from Local Schools 4pm-6pm - Including a Healthy Cooked Meal
There are two weekly sessions usually on Mondays and Thursdays from 4pm-6pm during term-time when students will be expected to attend both to allow for continuity.
The fee also includes minibus collection from local schools together with a healthy cooked meal served half-way through the two hour session with the rest of the children attending the after-school club. We are especially sensitive to dietary requirements as applicable to the multi-faith backgrounds of children attending the club.
